Artist Spotlight - Mark Brighton
I am an artist from Buxton, Derbyshire, with a combined arts degree from the University of Sussex.
My work is either acrylic on canvas or colour pencils on paper. I like to combine figurative and abstract elements with areas of light and shadow to create atmosphere and depth. I use textures and forms from nature, such as tree bark or stones and fuse these with sculptural and geometric shapes. Recently, Biomorphism as an art movement has been an influence on my work through its concerns with naturally occurring patterns and shapes suggestive of living organisms.
I produce rough pencil sketches, but often the picture takes on a life of its own as I work. I constantly assess each piece for the balance of forms and colours. The final image usually materialises after many compositional adjustments and is often not how I had envisaged it when I began. I like the ideas of chance and risk-taking and enjoy incorporating these into my work, making it more fluid and organic.
